About Suz

Hi blog readers! I'm Susan, aka Suz or Sue or Q or Suzicle (@kev) or Smirk depending on who's talking to me. Probably forgetting a few nicknames as well. Utilizing Suz for the blog since it seems to be the most commonly used but call me whatever you want.



Throughout my life, I've been a resident of many places: Longmeadow (Massachusetts), Miami, Sydney (Australia), Boston, Portland (Maine), Los Angeles and San Diego. I love all these places deeply (ehh maybe minus LA), plus many more. Traveling has been my jam for pretty much my whole life. When it comes to booking flights I get so trigger happy that it could probably be classified as a problem. 

So when I heard about a program called Remote Year, where I could live in a different city/country every single month while maintaining my remote job, I thought it had to be #fakenews. The more I read about the program, the more I felt like it was made for me. I applied, got in, got approval from my company (thanks Acuity!!) and now will be spending all of 2018 living in and exploring cities in South America, Europe and Africa. Of course it was more of a lengthy process than I just made it sound, but that's a story for another time. Here's the full 2018 itinerary:

APRIL: Medellín, Colombia
MAY: Bogota, Colombia
JUNE: Mexico City, Mexico

SEPTEMBER: Belgrade, Serbia
OCTOBER: Split, Croatia
NOVEMBER: Marrakech, Morocco
DECEMBER: Cape Town, South Africa

Other fun facts about me: I'm one of the most overly enthusiastic Miami Hurricanes football fans out there (go Canes). My diet consists of lots of burritos. My fav color is yellow. I am left-handed. If I had to choose between dogs and cats I couldn't, if I had to choose between coffee and tea I couldn't, if I had to choose between sunrises and sunsets I couldn't, if I had to choose between beaches and mountains it would be really really really hard but I would choose beaches!

Serbia is hands down the most random country on my travel itinerary this year. My boss told me he would rather go to prison than go to Serbia (LOL). I heard similar sentiments from most people about the country. The conversations would go something like this: Friend 1: "So where are you living next month?" Me: "Belgrade... it's in Serbia." The Prague Blague... see what I did there?

I wanted to skip writing a post about Prague. My feelings about the city are complex, and potentially controversial (I didn't love it... eeeek), and part of me wanted to just put it behind me as I start living the Serbia life. But writing these posts about each month really has helped me process my experiences, and hopefully has given you (yes, you, all 4 of my blog readers out there!) some insight into the weird world of living in a different city/country every month. Cape Town Is The Most Lekker

South Africa is so lekker bru! I lived in Cape Town for my last month of Remote Year, and it was the perfect place to close out the unreal experience of living and traveling throughout five different continents in 2018. These are some of my lekker mates embracing lekker van culture What does "lekker" mean? Ah, good question. It's Afrikaans slang and I'd say the closest equivalent in the USA would be "awesome" or more recently "lit" (is lit dead in 2019? if so, please clue me in to it's replacement?).
