Leveling Out in Lima

Our Remote Year group spent the third month of this year together living, working and playing in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima, Peru. Collectively we were so ready for a new country after living in Argentina for two months. Even though I claimed Córdoba wasn't so bad after all, by the end of February we were so over it, group morale was low, and a gorgeous coastal city was just what the doctor ordered.

In Miraflores each sunset is better than the next

Week 1 in Lima I hit the ground running, or more accurately, I hit the air flying. After a mere 36 hours of attempting to acclimate to my 3rd new home of 2018, I was back at the airport headed off to Cusco. I already waxed poetic on my love of Cusco, but in summary, it was an effing awesome trip, maybe one of my favorite trips ever (same goes for Patagonia, ahhh so many wonderful places)!

The moment I got back to Lima (seemingly, though in reality it was two days later), we hopped on a 4.5 hour bus headed south to visit an island populated by penguins and seals [Paracas], and then visit a desert oasis [Huacachina] where we rode dune buggies roller-coaster-style through the desert and then went sandboarding (like snowboarding or sledding depending on your tactics, but in sand rather than snow). Sandboarding has to fall into the same category as cliff pods as one of the coolest things I've ever done.

group consensus: sandboarding is awesome

So the first week was perfect: packed with activities that got us all jacked up on Peru and washed away any lingering negative vibes from Córdoba. In the following couple of weeks I was able to simmer down and take my time exploring Lima.

exploring - hanging out - exploring more

In that time, I dined at two of the top 50 restaurants in the world, went on frequent runs along a coastline that rivals my precious San Diego, visited a museum (and liked it!!!) and managed to finally establish a semblance of an eat-work-exercise-socialize-sleep routine that had been impossible to achieve in the wildness of Argentina.

Enjoying the 13 course tasting menu at Maido, the #7 restaurant in the world... in one night I went from having 0 food pics to at least 100

After riding the extreme January high from kicking off the year in vibrant, intense, non-stop Buenos Aires, and then spending February combatting #córdobaproblemz with weekly side trips, March in Lima served as my month of "equilibrium" (español for "balance" - which I learned from a beautiful mural while exploring Lima's Barranco neighborhood).

Got very spoiled with these running views

Overall I liked Peru a lot (though I think my número uno is still Buenos Aires <3). I was nervous going into Remote Year that I would get really sad to say goodbye to the cities I liked, but as I'm packing my life back into a suitcase yet again, my prominent feeling is excitement to explore Medellin, where we will be living throughout April.

Time to go enjoy one last lovely Lima sunset!

Saying farewell to Lima in the best possible way: sipping rosé at the beach while watching the sun set
