Sea Ya On The Split Side

Split, Croatia: real or default desktop background?

I truly felt I had to be dreaming when I arrived in Croatia. I had just spent three days in Munich celebrating Oktoberfest, which was arguably one of the best weekends of my life to date (been saying that a lot this year - will elaborate in a forthcoming post).

somehow Oktoberfest was even better than I thought it would be

In my haze of post beer-drinking-pretzel-eating exhaustion, I walked out of the Split airport into a gorgeous sunny day, and right there in front of me was the Adriatic Sea. *blink* *shake head* *blink again* ok it was still there, this was real life.

and Croatia was even more beautiful than I thought it would be

Let me back up for a sec: I don't have a bucket list written down, but I do have an ever evolving mental one, which includes visiting a bunch of places (the list keeps growing the more places I go), going to a lot of sports events (i.e. Wimbledon! a Super Bowl! a CFB National Championship if the Canes can ever get back there!), and having a variety of new experiences.

Attending Oktoberfest and visiting Croatia are two items that have featured prominently on my unwritten bucket list for as long as I can remember. So going from a full weekend of Oktoberfesting to arrive in Croatia, where I was about to live for a month, was the definition of a pinch-me moment. Could also be classified as a "This Is Why I Remote Year" (#WIRY) moment, as previously described in my Patagonia and Cusco posts.

Croatia is stunningly gorgeous. From the turquoise blue waters contrasted against the white stone architecture, to the tiny island towns scattered up and down the coast and the daily jaw-dropping sunsets, it is a country that is very easy on the eyes. Our apartments had ocean views and my daily running route involved weaving along the coastline, with waves crashing right up onto my legs at some points.

The different places we've lived in throughout the year have struck me for different reasons (i.e. the vibe in Buenos Aires, the people in Colombia, the history in Prague, the livability of Serbia, everything in Portugal). Croatia officially wins the "most aesthetically pleasing" award so far. Good looks, Croatia.

this is what happens when you look out the window in Croatia

However after spending a month in the beautiful seaside country, I view it is a place that is best visited for a few days or a week. I didn't find a whole lot of substance that I connected with while I was there beyond good looks (looks aren't everything, what a concept). Despite loving the view, by the end of the month I was very ready for a change of scenery.

Your one-week Croatia itinerary can go like this: island hop to whichever islands suit your preferences, eat all the seafood and then more seafood, spend most of your time on boats, and go home or to your next destination with a healthy tan.

seafood + boats + more seafood = Croatia

So Croatia is officially ticked off the bucket list, and I can highly recommend it to anyone looking for their next island getaway!

Croatia is also the perfect place to have visitors! So fun having Mike, Christa and Topher visit <3

And just like that, I'm heading into the final two months - the Africa months - of Remote Year. It's hard to wrap my head around what closing out this year will be like. Leaving each city behind month after month hasn't necessarily incited strong feelings, relative to what I imagine I'm going to experience when I say goodbye to the community I've become a part of and the lifestyle I've adapted to.

RY Aurora ladies love xo

That being said, all good things must come to an end (yikes, so many clichés in this post), and I'm already starting to look forward to the next chapter. But first, Africa!
